Early Stereoview, Unmarked

In 1877, the Liberty Bell was removed from its framework and suspended from the ceiling of the room directly below the tower clock.  The chain that suspended the Liberty Bell was composed of 13 links to symbolize the original 13 colonies.

The Liberty Bell's visits to the world's fairs in New Orleans and Chicago had actually weakened the Bell's condition.  In 1894, the Select Council Committee recommended that the Bell be placed on display in a  protective case.  The case, constructed by Francis Kramer, was made of oak and encased in glass panels.
