Early Displays of the Liberty Bell at Independence Hall 1852 - 1876

The earliest view of the Liberty Bell on display, circa 1870. The Bell is exhibited with the clapper suspended by a beam on its left and a stuffed bald eagle secured to the top. The entire display rests on a pedestal designed by Frederick Graff, Esq.

Later view of the Liberty Bell mounted on the pedestal, but without the stuffed eagle.  Immediately to the left of the Bell is one of the Liberty Caps that decorated the pedestal.

As part of the preparations for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, the Liberty Bell was removed from its pedestal in 1873 and re-hung on its old framework from the steeple.  The framework was lowered to the first floor Tower Room in Independence Hall.
