Republic of Texas Banknote Set
The Congress of the Republic of Texas was permitted by its 1836 Constitution to "coin money and regulate the value thereof" in order to get the fledgling Republic on sound fiscal footing. Unfortunately, the currency did not fare well. The notes in this set are a beautiful example of the artistic qualities of banknote engravers of the 19th century. Scenes depicting goddesses and locomotives give an impression of an optimistic and idealistic age. Exact replicas on antiqued parchment paper, printed on one side - they look and feel old! Average size of the individual banknotes is 3 1/4" x 7 1/4" and comes with a decorative envelope containing history of the Republic of Texas currencies. |
