Child's Hornbook Set Child's Hornbook Set features an exact-size replica hornbook lesson sheet on a wooden paddle and the ABC Hornbook in America booklet. The lesson sheet on the hornbook includes the ABC's, vowel combinations and the Lord's Prayer. Approximately 2 1/2 inches by 5 inches. The ABC Hornbook in America, a Child's Guide to His Letters, is a booklet on the history of the hornbook. Contains the definition of a hornbook, a description of Colonial American schools, an explanation of how a hornbook was made. Also included is information about other "learning tablets", how the hornbook was used as a toy, and the ultimate decline of the hornbook. Available in the back of the book is a paper hornbook to cut out. The booklet is filled with nostalgic line drawings and engravings. The hornbook was used as a primer for basic instruction during the 17th and 18th centuries in the English Colonies. Not really a book at all, original hornbooks were a thin piece of wood about 5 inches long with a handle. A removable paper lesson sheet was placed on the wood and covered with a thin sheet of clear horn as protection. |
